Polonnaruwa
Polonnaruwa is in the Polonnaruwa district in the North Central province. It’s famous for its good soil, which helps grow a lot of rice. The Mahaweli River is really important because it gives water to the area. There are many man-made lakes, called tanks, made by kings and queens a long time ago. One of the most impressive tanks is called the Parakrama Samudra, or Sea of Parakrama, made by King Parakramabahu. It can water the whole eastern region when it’s dry.
The time when King Parakramabahu ruled is seen as the best time in Polonnaruwa’s history. Lots of old buildings were made during this time, and now they’re ruins. Some cool places to see are the Polonnaruwa Vatadage, Hatadage, Rankoth Vehera, Nissanka Latha Mandapaya, and Gal Vihara. They show how skilled the ancient Sri Lankan people were at making things from stone. Many of these places are linked to Buddha, which gives us a glimpse into how talented people were at making detailed sculptures out of hard rocks.
Visiting Sri Lanka is an amazing experience, and exploring ancient Polonnaruwa will give you memories that last a lifetime.
