Kandy
Kandy is an important city in Sri Lanka, serving as the capital of the central province. It was the last capital during the time of the ancient kings. One of its most famous places is the Temple of the Tooth Relic, also known as Sri Dalada Maligawa. It used to be the palace of the last king, Sir Vikrama Rajasinha, and it’s now a museum. Kandy got UNESCO World Heritage status in 1988 because of its historical importance.
Another cool place to see in Kandy is the Lankathilaka Temple, which is a great example of traditional Sinhalese temple design. It sits on top of a rock, and inside, there’s a huge Buddha statue. Kandy is also known for a special event called the Esala Perahara. It’s a big parade that happens once a year. During the parade, they carry a special box that holds the Buddha’s tooth relic on top of an elephant. This event, which takes place in July or August, is loved by Sri Lankans and attracts lots of people from all over the country and the world. It’s a really special and emotional time for everyone involved.
